KA Racing inverter cooling plate

Together with KA Racing, Oerlikon AM has manufactured an inverter cooling plate for an electric racing car. The design features topology optimized structure for weight reduction and double helix internal structure for improved heat transfer.

Challenge:

  • Provide efficient cooling to inverter on a high-performance racing car
  • Reduce the weight of the component while improving performance
  • Reduce component count vs. traditional solutions

 

Solution:

  • CFD simulated for heat transfer and flow optimization
  • Topology optimized structure
  • Double helix internal structure printed, not possible with conventional machining¬†

 

Impact:

  • 3.75x Heat transfer coefficient vs. tube 20% gain in 2018 design
  • 12.4x reduction in pressure loss vs. tube 65% improved in 2018 design
  • 14% additional weight reduction in 2018
